Derby Wine Estates - Red Rhone
When I first got into the HUGE Paso Robles AVA, it was easy to get lost and probably overwhelmed with the number of wines to get a grasp on. That was until I came to the Rhone style that has really become a large part of what the region has made a name for itself with. That brings us to the 1510 Red from Derby, this blend is a unique and fun one because you won't find one winery with such a large portfolio of wines needed to pull off this Blend. This wine has the Mourvedre, the Syrah, and Grenache. But, it also goes beyond that with 18% of Counoise and Cinsault, allowing it to be more than your typical GSM blend. Some of the things I really liked about the production of this wine is that the harvest dates are all different as well as each varietal got its own attention to production before blending. Time and effort went into this flagship wine that I think really does showcase Derby Wine Estates. With only 589 cases produced you won't find in any big chains. With 15% alcohol and a strong core blend of GSM (grenache, syrah, mourvedre) to match, makes this wine perfect for something stronger than a Pinot Noir but different than a Cabernet Sauvignon or big bodied Tuscan.

Aromas that could have you smelling this wine for several minutes while finding a new smell each time; black cherry, plums, vanilla, olives, and possibly a coffee bean. This 5-varietal blend has great notes of cola, savory and smoked meats, with a licorice leaning more toward a light chocolate. Bright and present acid keep this 2012 vintage young and tasting great.
